1. Life Coaching Is Not Therapy

Misconception: A coach will help you heal trauma or diagnose mental health issues.
Truth: Life coaching focuses on forward movement, not clinical treatment. Coaches do not diagnose, treat, or process psychological disorders. That work belongs to licensed mental health professionals.

Distinction:
-Therapy often explores why you are the way you are.
-Coaching focuses on where you are going and how to get there.

2. Life Coaching Is Not Advice-Giving

Misconception: A coach will tell you exactly what to do.
Truth: Coaches do not hand out step-by-step life instructions or impose their opinions.

Distinction:
-Coaching empowers your decision-making.
-The coach helps you access clarity, confidence, and aligned action—not dependency.

3. Life Coaching Is Not Mentorship

Misconception: A coach must have lived your exact life or career to help you.
Truth: Coaching is not about replicating someone else’s path.

Distinction:
-Mentors share their experiences.
-Coaches help you design your own path using your values, strengths, and goals.

4. Life Coaching Is Not Motivation or “Hype”

Misconception: Coaching is just encouragement or feel-good pep talks.
Truth: Motivation alone fades. Coaching builds sustainable habits, accountability, and clarity.

Distinction:
-Motivation gets you started.
-Coaching helps you stay consistent and intentional long after motivation wears off.

5. Life Coaching Is Not Crisis Management

Misconception: A coach is the go-to person during emotional or mental health emergencies.
Truth: Coaches are not equipped to manage crises or replace emergency or clinical support.

Distinction:
-Coaching works best when a client is stable and ready for growth.
-Coaches may refer clients to appropriate professionals when needed.

6. Life Coaching Is Not a Quick Fix

Misconception: A few sessions will magically solve everything.
Truth: Coaching requires honesty, effort, and follow-through.

Distinction:
-Coaching accelerates growth, but it does not eliminate responsibility.
-Results come from consistent action—not shortcuts.

7. Life Coaching Is Not Judgment or Correction

Misconception: A coach will critique your choices or “fix” you.
Truth: Coaching is rooted in respect, curiosity, and partnership.

Distinction:
-Coaches don’t shame, lecture, or label.
-They create a safe space for reflection, awareness, and empowered change.

8. Life Coaching Is Not Only for People Who Are “Lost”

Misconception: You need to be broken or failing to work with a coach.
Truth: Many clients are high-functioning, capable individuals who want alignment, clarity, or growth.

Distinction:
-Coaching is for people ready to refine, expand, or realign—not just recover.

9. Life Coaching Is Not Passive

Misconception: You just show up and talk.
Truth: Coaching is interactive, intentional, and action-oriented.

Distinction:
-Clients co-create goals, explore blind spots, and commit to real-world action.
-Transformation happens between sessions.

10. Life Coaching Is Not About Becoming Someone Else

Misconception: Coaching molds you into a “better version” based on external standards.
Truth: Coaching helps you become more you—with clarity, alignment, and purpose.

Distinction:
-Coaching supports authenticity, not imitation.
-Growth without losing yourself is the goal.
